FirstCry’s subsidiary CEO resigns after leading it to unicorn

Nitin Agarwal, co-founder and CEO of GlobalBees, has resigned, effective April 24, 2025, due to personal reasons.

This was stated in a regulatory filing by FirstCry, which holds a majority stake in GlobalBees.

Agarwal co-founded GlobalBees in 2021 and led it to unicorn status in December 2021. He previously worked at InCred, Citibank, and Edelweiss Financial Services.

Anuj Jain, former chief business officer of FirstCry’s pre-school segment and senior vice president of marketing at Brainbees, has been appointed as the new CEO of GlobalBees, effective April 25, 2025.

Jain has over 20 years of experience and joined FirstCry in 2012.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The roll-up e-commerce model faces a critical inflection point

GlobalBees’ leadership change comes amid broader challenges for e-commerce roll-up companies, which acquire and scale D2C brands under one umbrella.

The model, pioneered by Thrasio in the US, has encountered significant headwinds, with Thrasio itself filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2024 despite raising over $3 billion in funding 1.

Indian roll-up companies, including GlobalBees and its competitors like Mensa Brands, have paused brand acquisitions amid funding challenges, shifting focus from aggressive expansion to managing existing portfolios 2.

The model’s struggles reflect the difficulties in integrating diverse brands, managing debt from rapid acquisitions, and achieving promised economies of scale to justify high valuations.

Despite these challenges, GlobalBees reported a consolidated turnover of INR 1,209 crore in FY24, showing 35% growth 3, suggesting the model can generate significant revenue even as operational challenges mount.

2️⃣ Executive transitions reflect broader market realignments

Agarwal’s departure fits into a larger pattern of CEO turnover, with January 2025 setting a record with 222 CEO departures across industries, a 14% increase from the previous year 4.

His exit coincides with a pivotal phase for GlobalBees. Founded in 2021, it quickly reached unicorn status within months but now faces a changing landscape where sustainable growth is prioritized over rapid expansion 2.
