First ByteDance AI phone prototype debuts, sells out in China

The first smartphone featuring ByteDance’s agentic AI phone assistant sold out online on its launch day in China.

The ZTE Nubia M153, available only as an “engineering prototype,” uses ByteDance’s Doubao Mobile Assistant, which handles tasks like booking restaurants and editing photos through voice commands.

Neither ByteDance nor ZTE, a Chinese smartphone maker, disclosed the number of Nubia M153 units available for purchase.

The phone, priced at 3,499 yuan (US$494), appeared on secondary markets for as much as 4,999 yuan (US$714.90), a 43% markup.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley and IDC noted that major phone brands are likely to develop their own AI assistants rather than partner with ByteDance, suggesting the company may only work with smaller manufacturers.

A demonstration video showed the assistant performing tasks such as editing images and comparing online prices for products.
