US fintech firm SoFi raises $3.2b in new funding

SoFi Technologies has secured up to US$3.2 billion in new funding from Fortress Investment Group and EdgeFocus to support its personal loan originations.

The funding includes US$2 billion in additional commitments from Fortress and a US$1.2 billion, two-year agreement through a joint venture with EdgeFocus.

Once focused on student loan refinancing, SoFi is now expanding into a broader financial platform with a shift toward less capital-heavy, fee-based revenue.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Fintech’s shift from growth-at-all-costs to sustainable profitability

SoFi’s move toward “less capital-intensive and more fee-based sources of revenue” exemplifies a broader industry transition happening across fintech.

The sector has matured significantly, growing from niche disruptors to a market valued at $550 billion as of 2023, double its 2019 valuation, with over 272 unicorns collectively worth $936 billion1.

After the 2022 funding slowdown and market correction, fintechs are prioritizing sustainable growth over rapid expansion, with companies like SoFi demonstrating this by structuring deals that improve capital efficiency.

This represents a critical evolution in fintech business models, moving from the previous emphasis on customer acquisition and market share toward profitability and operational efficiency.

Industry analysts project fintech revenues to grow three times faster than traditional banking through 2028, suggesting this model shift is positioning the sector for more sustainable long-term success1.

2️⃣ Alternative funding structures reshape lending economics

SoFi’s $3.2 billion commitment from Fortress and EdgeFocus highlights how fintech lenders are increasingly partnering with private credit providers rather than using their own balance sheets.

This approach marks a significant evolution from SoFi’s origins, when it funded loans primarily through venture capital and securitization without taking deposits2.

By 2019, SoFi had reached a valuation of $4.3 billion and was originating $1 billion in loans monthly, demonstrating how this funding model enabled substantial growth2.

The trend extends beyond SoFi to companies like Upstart, which has similarly partnered with firms including Blue Owl Capital and Centerbridge Partners to fund their consumer lending activities.
