Fintech firm Block shares drop 20% after weak Q1 earnings

Block Inc. shares dropped more than 20% on May 2 after the company reported disappointing first-quarter earnings and faced multiple analyst downgrades.

The company’s gross profit of US$1.38 billion fell short of expectations, and Cash App’s monthly active users remained flat at 57 million, with only an 8% increase in inflows.

Analysts from Wells Fargo, Seaport, BMO, and Benchmark downgraded the stock, citing weak payment volume growth and difficulties in monetizing Cash App.

Block lowered its full-year guidance due to macroeconomic uncertainties and weaker-than-expected consumer spending.

CEO Jack Dorsey emphasized improving customer engagement through banking services.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ P2P payment apps face difficult transition from growth to monetization

Cash App’s challenges mirror a critical phase that many fintech companies encounter: shifting from user acquisition to profitable monetization.

While Cash App has amassed 57 million monthly active users, it’s now struggling with flat user growth and just 8% increase in inflows despite adding new features like Afterpay integration 1.

This pattern explains why Block CEO Jack Dorsey admitted they weren’t “focused enough on the network,” shifting their strategy to emphasize peer-to-peer transactions as the foundation rather than solely banking services 1.

The contrast with Venmo is telling. PayPal reported Venmo’s revenue jumped 20% in Q1 2025, driven by better monetization of existing users through debit cards and instant transfers, showing two different approaches to the same challenge 1.

Cash App’s heavy reliance on Bitcoin transactions, which account for 73.9% of its revenue according to 2024 data, adds another layer of complexity to its monetization challenge as it makes the service more vulnerable to cryptocurrency market fluctuations 2.

2️⃣ Fintech companies face diverging paths in a maturing market

Block’s earnings miss highlights how fintech strategies are diverging as the market matures, with companies forced to choose distinct paths to profitability.

While Cash App is doubling down on lending through its Cash App Borrow program after receiving FDIC approval, Venmo is pursuing deeper integration with e-commerce checkout flows, representing two fundamentally different visions of fintech’s future 1.
