Finnish VC firm Lifeline raises $470m for European tech startups
Lifeline Ventures has raised €400 million (US$470 million) for its sixth fund, marking the largest tech startup fund in Finland to date.
The Helsinki-based venture capital firm invests in European tech startups and has previously backed companies such as Supercell, Wolt, Oura Health, Iceye, and Aiven.
Investors in the new fund include Grove Street Advisors, Finnish pension funds Varma and Elo, Nordea Bank’s Finnish life insurance unit, and the state investment company Tesi.
Lifeline’s previous five funds raised just under €390 million (US$420 million) combined.
The firm said the new fund will allow it to provide more follow-on capital to support portfolio companies as they scale.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Fund VI’s size boosts follow-on capacity beyond seed
- Lifeline’s €400 million Fund VI is almost quadruple the typical European early-stage fund and nearly equals its prior five funds together at just under €390 million 1. The bigger pool lets the team add follow-on capital (additional capital into existing portfolio companies) to breakout bets 1.
- The firm had a gap in its model. It struggled to keep backing winners as they scaled 1. partner Timo Ahopelto said it “felt a bit silly” to stop when companies hit “escape velocity,” citing Oura, which Bloomberg pegs near $11 billion in its latest round 1.
- Early funds returned about 6x net 1. Investors include Grove Street Advisors in the US 1. From Finland, backers include Varma and Elo 1. Nordea Bank’s Finnish life insurance arm is in the mix 1. So is Tesi, the state-owned industrial investment company 1. They expect Lifeline to repeat wins across Supercell and Wolt 1. Supercell is now controlled by Tencent 1. Wolt is part of DoorDash 1. Portfolio standouts also include Oura, ICEYE, and Aiven 1.
Non-Finnish founders can tap Finland’s startup scene and new capital
- The fund targets European tech startups, so founders outside Finland can use this pool. That includes the Nordics and the rest of Europe.
- Backers include international groups and local institutions. Companies built in Finland can serve global markets with that support.
- Lifeline plans its first check from Fund VI within weeks. The money is already moving.
