Financial software firm Intuit partners with OpenAI in $100m deal

Intuit, a US-based software provider known for TurboTax, QuickBooks, Credit Karma, and Mailchimp, will pay OpenAI over US$100 million in a multiyear deal for access to its large language models.

The OpenAI’s models will be used to enhance its financial products and integrate AI agents across its services.

The partnership includes bringing OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot into TurboTax, allowing users to connect their Intuit accounts and perform tasks related to tax filings or financial management within ChatGPT.

User data will remain within its system during these interactions.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

TurboTax users will be able to ask ChatGPT tax questions; e-filing support is unclear

  • TurboTax customers can link an Intuit account to ChatGPT 1 for help like refund estimates, credit card picks based on spending, or booking with a live, AI-powered local tax expert 2.
  • The company has not said if users can e-file inside ChatGPT, which regions will be covered, or when this goes live 1. That gap leaves the scope of the feature unclear.
  • Intuit says data stays in its system when accessed via ChatGPT 1. It lists technical and organizational safeguards 2, yet has not clarified who bears responsibility for AI errors 3.
  • OpenAI is turning ChatGPT into a general-purpose app across sectors with work under way with PayPal, Shopify, and Walmart 1.

Third-party compliance tools can help tax software companies navigate AI regulations

  • Vendors can add guardrails, audit logs, and data-boundary controls to keep data inside approved systems 4. Tools should align with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Section 7216, which limits client data use to tax return prep unless explicit written consent is obtained 4.
  • The IRS gives consent guidance for Section 7216 when preparers offer Affordable Care Act (ACA) services 5. AI that learns complicates compliance and requires ongoing review and certification 6.
  • Software providers need ways to manage consent forms, track disclosure scope, and ensure offshore AI processing follows location rules 6.
  • Thomson Reuters sells SafeSend, a consent and document delivery tool for firms in tax plus accounting, which streamlines 7216 consent management 7. Demand is rising as more tax software adds generative AI.
