Figma teams up with Anthropic to turn AI code into designs

Figma has partnered with Anthropic to develop a new feature called “Code to Canvas,” which converts AI-generated code into editable designs within Figma.

The tool aims to connect AI coding outputs, such as those from Anthropic’s Claude Code, with Figma’s design platform, allowing teams to refine and compare interface options.

The move suggests that AI coding tools are seen as complementary to design work, rather than replacing it entirely.

The company is scheduled to report earnings after market close on February 18.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Figma’s AI strategy includes more than one partnership

  • The Anthropic partnership fits into a wider AI plan, rather than a quick reaction.
  • Figma has already shipped AI tools, including “Figma Make,” a prompt-to-code feature that builds working prototypes from designs or text 1.
  • CEO Dylan Field has argued that as AI takes on more coding, design becomes the business edge 1.
  • “Code to Canvas” connects AI-written code, including outputs from Anthropic’s Claude Code, with designs that can be edited inside Figma 2.
  • Leadership has accepted lower near-term margins to pay for AI work, saying, “we expect margins to come down in the near term as we invest in the long term” 1.

AI features are pressuring software business models

  • The rollout keeps Figma testing how to charge as AI features grow.
  • Figma has talked about adding usage-based pricing to its seat-based subscriptions, such as AI credits tied to consumption, which may shape future guidance 1.
  • The feature aligns with “human-in-the-loop” platforms, where people review and tune AI output before it becomes a finished product.
  • When AI drafts the first version, value shifts to tools that help design and product teams steer results toward brand and usability standards, backed by customer examples such as Coinbase and Affirm 1.
