Female founder-focused VC firm Halogen Ventures bags $30m
Halogen Ventures, a venture capital firm led by founding partner Jesse Draper, has closed a US$30 million fund focused on the “future of family.”
This is the firm’s third fund and targets sectors like childcare, family tech, edtech, and related services.
The concept stemmed from Draper’s observations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed gaps in US family support systems.
She estimates this market, including scheduling tools, financial management, and family health services, to be worth US$7.5 trillion.
Halogen is Innovate Alabama’s first out-of-state partner and has pledged to support female founders in the state.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Covid-19 created a catalyst for family-focused venture capital
The pandemic exposed critical gaps in family support systems that venture capitalists are now addressing through targeted investments.
Research shows the crisis significantly impacted families, with 78% of family businesses reporting revenue declines during the pandemic 1.
Jesse Draper’s pivot to focus on the “future of family” directly responds to these pandemic-exposed needs, particularly in childcare where systemic failures became impossible to ignore.
This pattern aligns with broader research findings that crises often accelerate innovation in neglected sectors. The pandemic prompted a reevaluation of family priorities and infrastructure needs.
Halogen’s strategic repositioning from “childcare” to the broader “future of family” enabled them to frame a $7.5 trillion market opportunity that includes childcare, edtech, family tech, and workplace solutions.
2️⃣ Family-focused investment strategies are shifting toward direct control and impact
Halogen’s approach mirrors a larger trend where family offices increasingly prefer direct investments over traditional fund structures, seeking greater control and customization of their portfolios.
Industry data shows family offices are decreasing allocations to hedge funds in favor of direct investments that allow for better portfolio diversification and management control 2.
