Ex-Redmi chief fired by Xiaomi over leaks

Xiaomi has dismissed Thomas Wang Teng, General Manager of Xiaomi China Marketing and Redmi, for leaking confidential company information and violating internal policies.

The decision was communicated in an internal email from Xiaomi’s ethics committee on September 8.

Xiaomi said an investigation found Thomas Wang engaged in unauthorized disclosure of sensitive data and had conflicts of interest.

The company cited violations of its disciplinary and integrity codes as the reason for the dismissal.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Employee terminations for data breaches reflect industry-wide enforcement trend

  • Xiaomi’s dismissal of Wang Teng aligns with broader corporate practices, as 30% of UK companies have terminated employees for data breach negligence according to a 2018 survey1.
  • This demonstrates that tech companies are increasingly taking decisive action against internal data security violations, recognizing that information leaks can cause significant financial and reputational damage1.
  • The trend reflects a shift in corporate culture toward greater accountability in data management, with companies implementing stricter enforcement of data protection policies across various industries1.
  • Organizations are now more likely to have written policies with clear consequences for data leaks, emphasizing the importance of protecting proprietary information in competitive markets2.

Internal security enforcement contrasts with Xiaomi’s external data challenges

  • While Xiaomi strictly enforces internal data protection, the company has faced significant external security issues, including extensive user data tracking reported by Forbes in 20203.
  • Xiaomi devices were found to track user web browsing habits and search queries even in incognito mode, with data transmitted to servers in Singapore and Russia3.
  • The company experienced a major data breach in 2012 that exposed 7.1 million user accounts, including email addresses and passwords stored as salted MD5 hashes4.
  • Security researchers discovered vulnerabilities in Xiaomi devices as recently as 2024, highlighting ongoing external security challenges despite the company’s strict internal policies5.
  • This contrast suggests that while Xiaomi prioritizes protecting its own confidential information through employee discipline, it has struggled to implement equally robust protections for user data.
