Experts warn of rise in AI forging art ownership records

Collectors are increasingly using AI to create documents that claim to prove the authenticity and ownership of artworks, according to industry figures.

Industry figures say AI-generated invoices, certificates, and provenance records are being submitted to support valuations and insurance claims.

Fine art insurance broker Olivia Eccleston of Marsh said chatbots and large language models are helping people convincingly forge sales invoices, valuations, and certificates of authenticity.

A loss adjuster told the Financial Times that dozens of certificates submitted in one insurance case appeared identical, leading to suspicion they were produced by an automated writing system.

Industry figures noted that some AI-generated documents are the result of deliberate attempts to forge provenance, while others are produced when people ask AI to find references, and it generates false results.

Experts say forged documentation has long been a problem in the art world, but AI has made the process faster and more realistic.

Recent advances in AI have made it harder for specialists to detect fake provenance documents, according to claims specialist Sedgwick.

AI-forged art paperwork is rising, yet insurer defenses lag

  •  Fraud attempts rose 19% year over year in 2024, and AI scams now make up over half of digital financial fraud 1. In art insurance, brokers see chatbot-made invoices and valuations 2. They also see certificates of authenticity and provenance that fool specialists 2.
  •  Insurers face about 20 times higher fraud exposure than banks because they rely on documents and images 1. A loss adjuster (an insurance claim evaluator) found dozens of identical certificates in one case, which suggests automation 2.
  •  Only 18% of anti-fraud teams use generative AI (Gen AI) detection tools today, though 83% plan to by 2025 1.
  •  The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) gives tamper-evident provenance 3. OpenID for Verifiable Credential Issuance (OpenID4VCI) issues World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Verifiable Credentials (VCs) that insurers verify instantly 4. Integrate these checks into claims systems, gallery workflows, or marketplaces.
  •  About 67% of insurers worry about synthetic identity fraud rising, and leaders rank Gen AI-enabled fraud as the top trend over the next three to five years 5. Providers with ready-made verification APIs for art documents can move before established firms update systems.
