Ex-Bukalapak VP gets 4 years' jail in Nadiem corruption trial

A court in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta sentenced Ibrahim Arief – Bukalapak’s former engineering and R&D vice president turned Indonesia’s education ministry consultant – to four years in prison for corruption involving Nadiem Makarim.

This comes as Gojek’s founder – who served as Indonesia’s education minister from 2019 to 2022 – was accused of causing over 2.1 trillion rupiah (around US$120 million) in state losses in the procurement of Google’s Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management licenses during his tenure.

The court also fined him 500 million rupiah (around US$28,600), with 120 days in jail if unpaid, after finding him guilty under Indonesia’s anti-corruption law and the criminal code.

Prosecutors had sought 15 years in prison, a 1 billion rupiah (around US$57,000) fine, and 16.9 billion rupiah (around US$966,000) in restitution.

The sentence came in far below prosecutors’ request

The four-year prison term is far lighter than the 15 years prosecutors asked for. It amounts to a little over one quarter of that request.
The court also set a 500 million rupiah (US$29,000) fine, or half of the 1 billion rupiah (US$57,000) prosecutors sought.
Judges did not require 16.9 billion rupiah (US$964,000) in restitution, which prosecutors had also requested. That cut the final penalty further.
