Ex-Yahoo CEO’s AI startup Dazzle bags $8m seed round
Dazzle AI, a Palo Alto-based startup founded by former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, has raised US$8 million in seed funding at a US$35 million post-money valuation.
The round was led by Kirsten Green of Forerunner Ventures, with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Greycroft, Offline Ventures, Slow Ventures, Bling Capital, Amino Capital, and the Acquired Wisdom Fund.
The company said it will use the funds to expand its team and prepare for its first product launch.
Dazzle AI is developing AI applications aimed at making technology simpler and more user-friendly.
Mayer previously held senior roles at Google and Yahoo.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Dazzle keeps its product plans vague despite Mayer’s consumer AI stumbles
- Mayer said Sunshine (her prior consumer productivity startup) chased problems that felt mundane and lacked polish and accessibility despite raising $20 million 1. She has shared little beyond calling Dazzle a next‑generation AI personal assistant, software that helps users manage tasks and information 1.
- Shine was another consumer app linked to Mayer that flopped, so neither found wide use despite her Google and Yahoo background 12. Forerunner Ventures investor Kirsten Green said startup builders aren’t thinking in terms of incremental improvements or previous playbooks 3. The announcement gives scant detail on scope or users, launch is only in the coming months, and the raise looks like a bet on her name without proof of demand 3.
Job postings hint at tech choices and timing for infrastructure and tools vendors
- Dazzle is hiring a senior iOS software engineer and an AI research scientist, which signals a mobile focus with ML 4.
- The AI research scientist post says the hire will be a key driver of our machine learning and modeling efforts 4. That hints Dazzle plans to build its own models instead of using third‑party application programming interfaces (APIs) 4. About 15 employees are expected to move from Sunshine with funding supporting team growth before a first product launch 23. Recruiting firms and human‑resources (HR) tech vendors can use that hiring window.
