Ex-Tesla engineer launches robotics startup Mondo Tech

Shuo Yang, a former robotics engineer at Tesla, has co-founded a startup called Mondo Tech.

The start-up was established in Shenzhen in January with a registered capital of 1 million yuan (approximately US$136,500), according to corporate data from Qichacha.

The company is based in Palo Alto, California, and Shenzhen, China, and aims to develop smaller robots for consumers.

He said that Mondo Tech will focus on creating “mini robots” designed as companions for daily use. This idea was inspired by his desire to build a robot for his son.

Yang announced his departure from Tesla’s humanoid robot project, Optimus, on Apr. 9, 2025 via posts on X and LinkedIn.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cross-border talent flow reshaping the robotics landscape

Yang’s departure from Tesla to co-found Mondo Tech represents a growing pattern of engineering talent moving between US tech giants and Asia-based robotics ventures.

This trend extends beyond Yang, with former OpenAI engineer Roger Jiang launching Light Robotics in Singapore and Shenzhen in December, and ex-Google scientist Luo Jianlan joining Chinese humanoid robotics company AgiBot last month 1.

The bidirectional flow of talent is creating innovation hubs in both regions, with Shenzhen emerging as a particular focal point that leverages its established manufacturing ecosystem.

This talent migration coincides with China’s dramatic increase in robot adoption, growing from just 14% of global industrial robot installations in 2013 to 52% by 2023 2.

The movement of specialized engineers with experience at companies like Tesla, OpenAI, and Google creates valuable knowledge transfer across borders that accelerates development in both regions.

2️⃣ The emerging battle for consumer robotics market share

Yang’s focus on “mini robots that can serve as little friends” highlights a strategic pivot toward consumer applications as the next frontier in robotics competition.

This shift mirrors broader industry trends, as seen in the Chinese humanoid robot market which is projected to reach RMB 300 billion (US$41.3 billion) by 2035, creating significant investment opportunities across hardware and software sectors 3.
