Ex-Terraform Labs CEO pleads guilty in blockchain fraud

Do Kwon, co-founder of Terraform Labs, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud and one count of fraud.

Terraform Labs was behind the collapsed Terra blockchain and its algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD.

Kwon faces up to 25 years in prison and has agreed to forfeit US$19 million, as well as his stake in the company and its cryptocurrencies.

He was arrested in Europe in 2023 while traveling with a fake passport.

The Terra blockchain supported assets valued at about US$50 billion before its collapse in May 2022, which affected thousands of investors worldwide.

Anchor, one of Terra’s products, offered depositors high interest rates that attracted significant attention from cryptocurrency investors.

The Terra network continues to exist as Terra Classic, alongside a forked version, with both having a combined market cap of over US$400 million.

Kwon’s sentencing is set for April 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Algorithmic stablecoins have repeatedly proven fundamentally unstable under market stress

Do Kwon’s guilty plea closes the book on one of the most dramatic examples of why algorithmic stablecoins remain inherently risky compared to reserve-backed alternatives.

Terra’s UST maintained its dollar peg through an algorithmic relationship with LUNA rather than holding actual dollar reserves, a mechanism that proved catastrophically inadequate when tested 1.

The collapse was triggered by an $85 million trade on Curve Finance that overwhelmed the system’s stabilizing mechanisms, demonstrating how quickly algorithmic designs can spiral out of control 2.

This vulnerability stems from algorithmic stablecoins’ reliance on market confidence and complex token economics rather than straightforward asset backing.

When investor confidence wavers, these systems can enter “death spirals” where the mechanisms designed to maintain stability actually accelerate the collapse, as happened with both UST and LUNA simultaneously losing value.
