Ex-Tencent scientist’s AI startup Video Rebirth bags $50m

Video Rebirth, an AI video startup based in Singapore, has raised US$50 million in a new funding round with participation from global investors.

Founded by former Tencent scientist Dr. Wei Liu, the company develops AI-powered video generation tools for professional creators in ads, ecommerce, film, and animation.

The startup said it aims to launch its first product in December 2025, targeting users who need high-quality, controllable video output.

It claims its proprietary technology can generate videos with improved realism, motion consistency, and physics awareness.

The funds will be used to expand research and bring its platform to market.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Video Rebirth has not shared public proof for its Sora-competitor pitch

  • Video Rebirth pitches itself as a Sora rival 1 (Sora is OpenAI’s text-to-video system) with a “Physics Native Attention” architecture 2 for motion and object interactions. It released no demos, benchmarks, or papers. Established players include Runway (a generative video software company), Pika (an AI video startup), and OpenAI.
  • A December 2025 launch target 2 leaves customers and investors betting on unproven tech. The team also says current AI video misses pro studio standards for motion consistency and physics 2.
  • No word on compute partnerships (for access to large graphics processing unit (GPU) clusters) 2, cloud deals, or model performance data. That gap makes it unclear whether Video Rebirth fixed tough industry issues or just rewrapped small gains 2.

Stock footage libraries can earn by licensing AI training data

  • AI buyers pay $1-4 per minute for high-quality video training data 3, with higher rates for 4K, specialized clips like drone footage, and exclusive rights. That gives rights-holders with curated archives a quick revenue path.
  • Versos (an industry tracker) lists Adobe, NVIDIA, and Runway licensing video content directly 4. Intermediaries such as Troveo AI (a third-party that brokers dataset licensing and manages rights) handle negotiations 3, which lets stock libraries start without new infrastructure.
  • Early movers offering rights-cleared, indemnified (with legal protection against third-party claims) video datasets can win revenue from AI video startups 3. Organize archives by specs like 4K resolution and standard frame rates to meet buyer needs 3.
