Ex-Swedish EV battery firm execs launch AI firm in manufacturing
Two former executives of bankrupt Swedish EV battery manufacturer Northvolt AB have launched a new AI-driven manufacturing venture.
Peter Carlsson, Northvolt’s former CEO, and Siddharth Khullar, who previously led the company’s AI initiatives, established Aris Machina AB.
The Swedish-based startup has received early-stage funding from investors, including Earlybird, Village Global, AENU, and Planet A, as well as several angel investors. The amount of funding was not disclosed.
Aris Machina plans to develop AI software to optimize manufacturing processes in industries such as batteries, semiconductors, bio-pharmaceuticals, robotics, and defense.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Pivoting from hardware to software after a $15 billion lesson
Carlsson and Khullar’s new AI venture represents a significant strategic shift after Northvolt’s collapse late last year.
Northvolt had raised $15 billion and secured $50 billion in orders before filing for bankruptcy with $5.8 billion in debt, making it one of Europe’s most high-profile green tech failures 1.
This pivot from capital-intensive battery manufacturing to software development reflects a common pattern in entrepreneurship: founders applying hard-won lessons from previous ventures to build more capital-efficient businesses.
The AI-focused approach eliminates the enormous operational complexities that plagued Northvolt, which reportedly operated at less than 1% of its intended production capacity despite massive investment 2.
By focusing on optimization software rather than physical production, Aris Machina can operate with substantially lower capital requirements while still leveraging the founders’ understanding of manufacturing challenges.
2️⃣ Addressing manufacturing’s knowledge gap with artificial intelligence
Northvolt’s collapse revealed that funding alone cannot overcome fundamental operational challenges in complex manufacturing environments.
Post-mortems of Northvolt point to knowledge gaps and integration failures across supplier networks as key reasons for its downfall, with critics highlighting poor communication and lack of transparency within leadership 32.
These problems are common across manufacturing sectors, including batteries, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals, where tacit knowledge and operational excellence are essential but difficult to systematize.
