Ex-OpenAI CTO Murati launches human-AI collaboration lab

Mira Murati, the former chief technology officer of OpenAI, has launched a new AI startup, Thinking Machines Lab, with over 30 employees, including more than a dozen ex-OpenAI staff.

The company, co-founded with John Schulman, Barret Zoph, and Lilian Weng, focuses on developing AI models for “human-AI collaboration” across various fields.

Thinking Machines Lab aims to create AI systems that work alongside humans rather than independently. The startup is prioritizing applications in science and programming to drive innovation.

While it has not yet released a product, it plans to share research through blog posts, papers, and open-source code.

The company is reportedly engaging with venture capital firms for potential funding but has not commented on its financial plans.

Murati, who played a key role in OpenAI’s major releases like ChatGPT, briefly served as interim CEO before departing in late 2023.
