Ex-Intel CEO launches benchmark for AI value alignment

Pat Gelsinger, the former CEO of Intel, has introduced a benchmark to assess how well AI models align with human values.

This initiative, named Flourishing AI (FAI), was launched in partnership with Gloo, a technology company focused on faith-based solutions.

The FAI benchmark is based on the Global Flourishing Study, which was conducted by Harvard and Baylor University to evaluate global human well-being.

Gloo has adapted six categories from the study—Character and Virtue, Close Social Relationships, Happiness and Life Satisfaction, Meaning and Purpose, Mental and Physical Health, and Financial and Material Stability.

Additionally, Faith and Spirituality have been included as a seventh category to evaluate large language models (LLMs).

Gelsinger, who completed a 40-year tenure at Intel in December, said in an interview that he has a longstanding interest in projects that connect technology and faith.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Addressing a critical gap in AI evaluation metrics

Gelsinger’s new benchmark addresses a widely recognized problem in how we evaluate AI systems today.

Multiple studies show current AI benchmarks are poorly designed and often lead to unreliable or misleading assessments of AI capabilities, with experts arguing they lack construct validity for measuring true understanding 1.

The timing aligns with growing industry recognition of benchmark limitations, as highlighted by Technology Review’s recent reporting that even celebrated benchmarks used to claim GPT-4 outperforms human experts may not accurately reflect AI capabilities 2.

This benchmark emerges as companies increasingly adopt AI principles (71 of the 200 largest digital companies now have them, up from 52 in 2023) but struggle with implementation, with only 29 companies disclosing how they actually apply these principles 3.

2️⃣ The integration of spiritual well-being represents a distinctive approach to AI alignment

By including “Faith and Spirituality” alongside more commonly measured aspects of human flourishing, Gelsinger’s benchmark introduces a dimension largely absent from mainstream AI evaluation frameworks.

Most industry frameworks currently focus on four main principles: transparency, privacy, fairness, and accountability, with variations tailored to specific sectors like healthcare, finance, and telecommunications 4.
