Ex-AWS execs’ cloud startup Eon raises $300m series D

Eon, an Israeli cloud data-management startup, has raised US$300 million in a series D round led by Gil Capital, bringing its valuation to US$4 billion.

The company, founded in January 2024 by AWS alumni Ofir Ehrlich, Ron Kimchi, and Gonen Stein, has now raised more than US$500 million.

Eon’s platform automates cloud backup tasks and provides enterprises with access and control over their backup data.

Existing investors Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Greenoaks also joined in the latest round.

Ehrlich and Stein previously co-founded CloudEndure, which was acquired by AWS in 2019 for US$200 million.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Eon’s $4B valuation bets on a data warehouse for backups that makes passive storage queryable

  • Most cloud backups use general-purpose snapshots (point-in-time copies) that keep data idle and tough to reuse beyond recovery, so restoring a single file can be slow and clunky 1.
  • The pitch turns backups into active data for AI and analytics, creating a second data lake (a large repository of raw data kept for multiple uses) 2.
  • Founders filed patents on cloud environment management 3. They also target faster access with caching (temporarily storing frequently used data) and pre-fetching (retrieving data before it is requested), aimed at performance-sensitive access.
  • This model could win premium pricing if buyers pay for storage plus analytics or model training on backups without a restore, merging two categories in one platform.

How live access to backups could cut non-production cloud spend for some teams

  • The platform runs on AWS plus Google Cloud plus Microsoft Azure 4. It offers cross-cloud portability and access (read or analyze data across providers without moving it).
  • Live access (querying data in place without a full restore) pairs with global search and granular file restoration 5. Teams in data engineering and analytics plus quality assurance (QA) can skip duplicate datasets for test or QA or analytics work.
  • Eon claims 30-50% backup cost cuts by shifting from primary storage (high-performance, production systems) into Eon’s secondary storage (lower-cost tiers) while keeping direct object storage API access 2.
  • CTOs can start with small read-only trials on backups to gauge performance and cost before scaling.
