EV maker Eka Mobility bags $56.8m from India-Japan Fund
Eka Mobility, an EV bus manufacturer based in India, has raised 500 crore rupee (US$56.8 million) from the India-Japan Fund managed by the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund.
The company plans to use the capital to expand manufacturing capacity, invest in R&D, and improve its supply chain infrastructure.
It previously secured 200 crore rupee (US$22.7 million) from Enam Holdings in June.
The funding comes amid rising interest in India’s EV bus sector.
The International Finance Corporation recently announced US$137 million in financing for JBM ECOLIFE and GreenCell Mobility.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
EKA Mobility’s Rs 500 crore raise lacks clear demand backing for capacity expansion
- As an electric-bus maker, EKA Mobility has not stated confirmed demand. The order book holds over 3,300 buses 1, yet deliveries remain unclear, so the expansion is hard to size or time.
- EKA delivered 72 buses in FY25 for a 0.3% share, then hit 163 in Apr–Sep 2025 (H1 FY26) at 8% 2. It trails Tata Motors at 32% with 1,058 deliveries in FY25 and PMI Electro at 26% in H1 2025 32.
- Capacity is slated to rise from 250 to 500 buses per month by end FY26 2. Wins from tenders for 10,900 buses under PM E-DRIVE, a central government program to deploy electric buses, will decide utilization and protect against idle lines 4.
Rising e-bus tenders open doors for charging and grid specialists
- PM E-DRIVE covers 10,900 buses and requires charging gear, maintenance, and operations under a unified Gross Cost Contracting (GCC) model 4. That drives depot charging engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work plus energy management software demand.
- Tenders span Bengaluru with 4,500 buses, Delhi with 2,800, and Hyderabad with 2,000 4. Grid upgrade specialists can pitch plans to state transport utilities, which are government-owned bus operators, to handle loads from simultaneous charging at large depots.
- Technology firms and infrastructure players can track 1,092 live electric bus tenders across Indian states 5 to spot procurement cycles early and tailor bids for charging systems, depot development, or operations tech before awards.
