EV interest declines among new Western drivers: report

Interest in EVs among new drivers in Western countries is declining, even though most current EV owners are satisfied, according to a survey by Shell Plc.

The survey included over 15,000 drivers from China, Europe, and the US.

It found that high upfront costs remain a significant barrier for potential EV buyers.

In Europe, 43% of non-EV drivers cited affordability as a major concern.

In the US, interest in EVs among internal combustion engine drivers dropped to 31% this year, down from 34% in 2024.

Similarly, interest in Europe fell to 41%, a decrease from 48% last year.

In contrast, China saw increased EV adoption, with single-vehicle EV ownership rising from 72% to 89% due to better technology and lower prices.

Globally, 90% of EV owners are likely to buy another EV, with fewer worries about charging and improved public infrastructure.

Shell, with over 75,000 charging points, said more support is needed to grow EV demand and make clean transport accessible to all.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The widening global EV adoption gap reflects policy effectiveness

China’s dramatic rise in EV adoption isn’t happening by accident but through sustained policy implementation and investment.

The country supported its EV industry with over 200 billion yuan ($28 billion) in government subsidies, creating a market where EVs now represent over one-third of new vehicle sales compared to under 10% in the US1.

This divergence is reflected in consumer attitudes, with nearly all Chinese consumers expressing likelihood to purchase an EV versus just 35% of American consumers2.

The European approach falls between these extremes, with a compound annual growth rate of 62% in EV adoption driven by stricter emissions regulations and consumer incentives1.
