EV battery race intensifies among Japanese automakers

Japanese automakers are adopting new battery technologies to boost electric vehicle (EV) performance, amid increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers.

Batteries make up about a third of an EV’s cost and are key to its range and lifespan.

Suzuki Motor plans to use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, commonly used by Chinese EV makers like BYD, for its e Vitara SUV launching in January.

LFP batteries are considered safer and more durable but provide less driving range due to lower energy density.

AESC, a Japanese battery supplier, said LFP battery performance has improved through better battery layout.

Honda uses NCM batteries in its N-ONE e: minivehicle, achieving a 295-kilometer range, the highest for its class in Japan.

Japan’s LFP sourcing and battery collection uncertainty

  • Who will supply LFP cells to Suzuki is unspecified. Japan’s LFP capacity through 2028 is unclear, leaving sourcing, costs and geopolitical risk murky.
  • Nissan cancelled its planned 5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) LFP plant in Kitakyushu that was slated for 2028 and about 500 jobs, despite government subsidies up to €340 million 12. Net profit fell 94% year on year in April–September 12.

Openings for battery tracking before 2026 rules

  • Startups and recyclers see an opening because Japan lacks a unified collection framework. They can build tracking tools and reverse logistics for second-life storage (repurposing used EV batteries for stationary energy storage) before rivals scale.
  • The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) approved classifying lithium-ion battery products as ‘specified recyclable’ from April 2026, which requires makers to recover them through retail stores 4.
  • Mapping METI’s 2025–2026 roadmap lets firms time launches plus partnerships with automakers or battery suppliers that need compliant collection systems.
  • LFP uses cheaper materials, while recycling economics remain unclear, so early movers can win volume with low-cost compliance services plus data-driven health tracking that boosts reuse value.
