The European Commission has announced plans to raise US$21.8 billion to establish four “AI gigafactories.”

This move aims to enhance Europe’s capabilities in AI through large-scale public data centers.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the gigafactories as a public-private partnership under the InvestAI initiative.

Funding will come from a European Investment Bank-supported fund, existing EU programs, and contributions from member states.

Each facility is expected to house 100,000 GPU chips. It will support the development of advanced AI models compliant with the EU’s data protection regulations.
