European drone startup Destinus to buy Swiss firm for $223m

Destinus, a drone maker based in the Europe, plans to acquire Zurich-based firm Daedalean for 180 million Swiss francs (US$223 million) in cash and stock.

Daedalean develops autopilot and machine learning systems for aviation, including technology that can help aircraft navigate without GPS or satellite signals.

Destinus supplies drones to Ukraine and is also developing hypersonic aircraft.

Both companies expect the deal to close by the end of this year.

Destinus said the acquisition will help improve its AI capabilities for both military and civilian applications, particularly as electronic warfare in Ukraine increases the need for navigation without satellite support.

Daedalean has raised US$100 million from investors, including Honeywell’s venture arm, and has been testing its technology with Italian defense contractor Leonardo.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ European defense spending surge fuels startup acquisitions

Destinus’s $223 million acquisition reflects a broader pattern of increased defense investment across Europe following geopolitical tensions.

European defense spending has risen significantly, with NATO members collectively increasing their budgets and several countries meeting or exceeding the 2% GDP spending guideline by 2018 1.

This trend has created substantial opportunities for defense startups, with companies like Helsing and Quantum Systems also raising large funding rounds recently as mentioned in the original reporting.

Destinus itself exemplifies this growth, with revenue surging from $18 million in 2023 to $70 million in 2024—a 289% increase driven primarily by defense contracts 2.

The company’s current fundraising talks at a €1.5 billion valuation, despite being founded only in 2021, demonstrate how rapidly defense startups can scale in this environment 3.

2️⃣ GPS-independent navigation becomes critical competitive advantage

The acquisition specifically targets Daedalean’s ability to help weapons systems navigate without satellite systems, addressing a key vulnerability exposed in modern warfare.
