The European Commission said on June 14 it was reviewing the effects on European users of a US export control order affecting Anthropic.

The Commission added that contingency measures taken for national-security reasons should not discriminate against partners.

Anthropic said on June 12 it had been ordered to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for foreign nationals, citing national-security concerns.

The move appears consistent with US deemed-export rules, which treat transfers of controlled technology to foreign nationals as exports to their home countries.

It also aligns with efforts by Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) to refine controls on the global diffusion of advanced AI technologies.

Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said newer AI models can support cyber-defense but also pose serious cybersecurity risks.

He added that the case reinforced Europe’s need for technological sovereignty as the European Union backs AI Factories with 10 billion euros (US$11.6 billion) in combined 2021–2027 investment.
