The European Union is planning to fine Google a high triple-digit million-euro amount over alleged breaches of the Digital Markets Act, or DMA, tied to its search business, according to European Commission sources.

The case focuses on whether Google Search gives Alphabet’s own services more prominent placement than rival services, including shopping, flights, and hotels.

Under the DMA, the Commission can fine gatekeepers up to 10% of their global turnover. At that level, the penalty would be larger than the bloc’s first DMA fines, announced on April 22, 2025. The Commission fined 500 million euros (US$582 million) Apple and 200 million euros (US$233 million) Meta.

The Commission said it was more focused on securing compliance than on penalties. Google said it wanted to resolve the case after the European Union gave the company more time this month to address the regulator’s concerns.
