European AI startup SpAItial raises $13m seed funding

A new European startup, SpAItial, co-founded by Matthias Niessner, has secured US$13 million in seed funding to create AI models for generating interactive 3D environments from text prompts.

The funding round was led by Earlybird Venture Capital, with contributions from Speedinvest and various angel investors.

Niessner, a researcher at the Technical University of Munich and former co-founder of AI avatar startup Synthesia, has taken a leave of absence to focus on SpAItial.

He is joined by Ricardo Martin-Brualla, who previously worked on Google’s 3D teleconferencing platform, and David Novotny, who led projects at Meta for six years.

Luke Rogers, a former executive at Cazoo, will oversee business operations.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ 3D model generation represents the fourth wave in design technology evolution

SpAItial’s venture sits at the peak of a decades-long technological evolution that has transformed how we create spatial environments.

This evolution has progressed through distinct phases: modularity (1930s), computational design (1980s), parametricism (1990s-2000s), and now AI-driven generation 1.

The foundations of 3D modeling technology date back to the 1960s, when Pierre Bézier developed UNISURF, the first true 3D CAD program, revolutionizing vehicle design between 1966 and 1968 2.

The development of texture-mapping algorithms by Ed Catmull in the 1980s marked another crucial milestone, enhancing the realism of 3D models and laying groundwork for today’s photorealistic rendering 3.

SpAItial’s $13 million seed round reflects investor recognition that we’ve reached an inflection point where computational power and AI techniques can finally address challenges that have persisted since the earliest days of 3D visualization.

2️⃣ The technical hurdles for 3D AI far exceed those of 2D image generation

While 2D image generation has rapidly matured, creating interactive 3D environments presents significantly more complex challenges that explain SpAItial’s focus on “worlds that behave like the real world.”
