EU seeks ‘respect’ as Trump slaps 50% tariff
European Union Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic has emphasized the need for mutual respect in trade discussions amid tensions over United States President Donald Trump’s 50% levy threat.
This announcement comes as he expresses frustration with the progress of EU-US trade negotiations, with proposed tariffs set to take effect on June 1, 2025, unless an agreement is reached.
“EU-US trade is unmatched and must be guided by mutual respect, not threats. We stand ready to defend our interests,” Sefcovic said after talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
European leaders have raised concerns about the potential economic impact of the proposed tariffs.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin called for continued negotiations, while France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Saint-Martin and Germany’s Economy Minister Katherina Reiche also urged for deescalation while reiterating their readiness to respond if necessary.
The EU is a key trade partner for the US, having exported over US$600 billion in goods to the US last year, while importing US$370 billion worth.
Trump has criticized what he describes as an uneven trade relationship. He has previously imposed tariffs on EU steel and aluminum, which remain in place.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Trade wars typically hurt both sides economically, despite claims of unilateral benefits
The economic impact of tariffs consistently demonstrates negative outcomes for both the imposing country and its targets, contradicting the notion that they simply protect domestic industries.
Economists estimate that full implementation of Trump’s tariff threats could reduce U.S. GDP by 0.6-1.0% while the EU would see a more modest but still significant 0.2% contraction 1.
The cost to American consumers is substantial, with the average effective U.S. tariff rate rising to 22.5% in early 2025, representing the highest level since 1909 and translating to approximately $3,800 in additional annual costs per household 2.
Tariffs function as a regressive tax, disproportionately burdening lower-income households who spend a greater percentage of their income on consumer goods. Those in the bottom income distribution faced annual losses of $980 from the April 2025 tariffs alone 2.
Previous trade disputes demonstrate that while tariffs may produce short-term revenue, they typically trigger retaliatory measures that further damage export opportunities and disrupt global supply chains essential to both economies.
2️⃣ EU-U.S. trade disputes follow predictable negotiation patterns with compromised resolutions
