EU orders Meta to restore AI rivals’ WhatsApp access
The European Commission has ordered Meta to restore rival general-purpose AI assistants’ access to WhatsApp Business within five working days.
The Commission said Meta’s recent changes could seriously and irreparably harm competition while an antitrust investigation is ongoing.
Meta said it would appeal the interim order.
The company argued that the EU had decided OpenAI and some of the world’s largest companies could use the paid WhatsApp Business product for free.
If Meta fails to comply, it could face fines of up to 10% of global annual revenue, as well as daily penalties, though EU fines seldom reach that level.
The interim measures will stay in force until the investigation ends.
