EU invests $1.6b to boost homegrown AI adoption
The European Union is urging key industries to use more AI technologies developed within Europe to reduce reliance on foreign providers.
The European Commission will mobilize €1 billion (US$1.6 billion), mainly from its Horizon research program, to boost adoption in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, energy, and defense.
The funding will support projects from autonomous vehicles to advanced cancer screening.
The EU is also expanding AI infrastructure by building gigafactories and tripling data center capacity.
Only 13% of European firms used AI last year, but this number has grown, according to EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen.
The Commission aims for 75% of businesses to use AI by 2030 and warned that depending on external AI infrastructure could threaten supply chains.
