EU Commission preliminarily flags Meta over feeds
The European Commission said its preliminary investigation found that Meta failed to adequately assess and mitigate risks posed by features on Facebook and Instagram, including infinite scrolling, autoplay videos, and highly personalised feeds.
The regulator said the features could encourage excessive use, particularly among children and other vulnerable users.
The Commission asked Meta to introduce measures such as screen-break reminders, stronger parental controls, and changes to its content recommendation algorithms.
Meta said it does not agree with the preliminary findings but will continue to communicate and consult with European Union regulators.
Under the Digital Services Act, the findings are not final.
Meta can respond and take corrective measures before a formal decision. Confirmed breaches can draw fines of up to 6% of global turnover.
The move fits a broader European Union enforcement push. TikTok is facing a parallel Digital Services Act case over similar alleged addictive-design risks affecting minors and vulnerable adults.
Meta already offers Instagram Teen Accounts with built-in protections, including requiring parental permission for users under 16 to make some settings less strict.
