Etsy launches ChatGPT app to search listings

Etsy has launched a beta app in ChatGPT that lets users tag @Etsy to search its more than 100 million listings with natural language.

The move follows Etsy’s earlier participation in ChatGPT Instant Checkout, which ended in March after the feature drove limited sales.

Etsy also said it is testing a conversational gift search on its own platform.

It joins other companies that have built native apps for ChatGPT.

The launch came a week after Etsy reported Q1 2026 revenue of US$631 million and active buyers of 86.6 million.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenAI’s first ChatGPT shopping tool hit the limits of online retail

  • Instant Checkout struggled with basic retail tasks, and OpenAI later moved away from it.
  • Product details were often wrong, including price and stock. The tool also could not manage multi-item carts or connect with merchant loyalty programs 1.
  • Stripe powered the checkout flow, using the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard Stripe and OpenAI developed to handle orders 2.
  • At launch, Etsy sellers worried the tool would put more distance between them and shoppers. Buyers checked out as guests on Etsy, then had to link accounts by hand to leave reviews, message sellers, or file support tickets 3.

AI is settling into product discovery across online shopping

  • Etsy’s move fits a wider shift. AI is helping people find products, while merchants still handle payment and fulfillment.
  • OpenAI said its first checkout setup was too rigid, so it turned to merchant-run checkout flows and kept its focus on product discovery 1.
  • That change is creating a tougher race in conversational search. Some Etsy sellers are already rewriting product descriptions to place higher in ChatGPT results 3.
  • Target, Sephora, and Nordstrom are also giving ChatGPT product feeds. Each keeps control of the final sale through its own checkout tools, including in-chat apps 1.
