Ethereum Foundation launches $1m audit subsidy program
The Ethereum Foundation has launched an Audit Subsidy Program with a US$1 million pool to help Ethereum mainnet developers cover the cost of smart contract security audits, which can be prohibitively expensive for many teams.
The foundation said an expert committee will review applications, and selected builders can use the subsidies for audit services through Areta’s platform, with partners including Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, and access to more than 20 audit firms.
It also introduced a framework called CROPS, short for censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security, alongside its Trillion Dollar Security Initiative.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Ethereum’s new subsidy uses an existing marketplace to lower audit costs
- The program runs through Areta, a smart contract security audit marketplace where Ethereum developers can get 10 to 12 quotes from more than 20 audit firms for one project 1.
- Areta is built to make pricing easier to compare and to push firms to compete, with similar platform programs averaging up to 2% lower costs even before subsidies 1.
- An expert committee reviews applications, along with partners Areta, Nethermind, a blockchain infrastructure and engineering firm, and Chainlink Labs, the main developer organization behind the Chainlink blockchain connectivity network 2.
- The subsidy pays out in full only after teams fix the audit findings, which ties funding to follow-through 2.
This subsidy model is becoming a common tool in blockchain platform competition
- Foundation-led audit subsidies have become a frequent way to draw developers, with ecosystems like Uniswap and Scroll also using Areta’s marketplace setup 13.
- Ethereum’s approach looks like a public-good effort tied to Ethereum mainnet, though the available reporting does not lay out detailed limits 4.
- Scroll takes a different route, with an exclusivity clause that keeps code audited under its program exclusive to the Scroll ecosystem for a fixed period 3.
- That gap frames Ethereum’s subsidy as support for the core network, while other ecosystems use subsidies to keep promising apps from launching elsewhere 3.
