China’s wafer giant Eswin secures approval for $683m Shanghai IPO
Eswin, China’s largest producer of 12-inch silicon wafers, has received approval to list on Shanghai’s Star Market, aiming to raise 4.9 billion yuan (US$683 million).
The company manufactures monocrystalline silicon polished wafers and epitaxial wafers used in integrated circuits.
Eswin’s technology is considered important for China’s efforts in semiconductor self-sufficiency, especially as demand for AI and advanced chips rises.
The firm said it supplies wafers to major Chinese foundries and memory chipmakers, but did not name specific customers.
Founded in Beijing in 2016, Eswin recruited Wang Dongsheng, founder of display company BOE Technology, three years after its launch.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ China’s semiconductor self-sufficiency deadline creates urgency for domestic funding
Eswin’s IPO timing aligns with China’s approaching 2025 deadline for achieving 70% self-sufficiency in high-tech industries under the Made in China 2025 initiative 1.
The plan, launched in 2015, specifically targets 70% domestic content in core semiconductor components by 2025, making companies like Eswin critical to meeting these strategic goals 2.
With less than a year remaining to hit these targets, Chinese semiconductor companies are under pressure to scale production capabilities rapidly.
The $682.8 million Eswin aims to raise reflects the substantial capital requirements needed to build domestic semiconductor infrastructure before the government’s self-imposed deadline.
This urgency explains why Chinese chip companies are increasingly turning to public markets for funding, as traditional government subsidies alone may be insufficient to achieve the ambitious 2025 targets.
2️⃣ China’s massive chip import dependence makes 12-inch wafer capacity strategically vital
China currently imports over 90% of its integrated circuits, spending more on semiconductor imports than on crude oil, highlighting the strategic vulnerability that Eswin’s capabilities address 3.
This import dependence means that domestic 12-inch wafer production represents a critical bottleneck in China’s supply chain independence efforts.
