Equinix expands Malaysia’s footprint with KL1 data center upgrade

Equinix has announced the completion of the second phase of its KL1 International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This expansion adds 450 cabinets, increasing the facility’s capacity to meet regional demand for digital infrastructure.

Since launching in Malaysia in 2024, Equinix has drawn clients from sectors like cloud services, IT, digital media, enterprises, and network providers.

The company has interconnected its KL1 and Johor-based JH1 data centers with its Singapore campus via Equinix Fabric.

This creates a cross-border digital network that includes over 1,000 companies.

Equinix also plans to expand further in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand to help businesses manage multi-site and latency-sensitive workloads.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ ASEAN’s growing status as a global data center hub amid record FDI

Equinix’s Malaysian expansion reflects a broader trend of accelerating data center investments across Southeast Asia, driven by record-breaking capital inflows.

ASEAN attracted approximately $235 billion in foreign direct investment in 2024, representing a 2% increase from the previous year despite global FDI declining in most developing regions 1.

This surge has made Southeast Asia a primary battleground for data center development, with the regional market projected to grow at 9.6% annually through 2029 as demand for cloud services, AI computing, and digital infrastructure intensifies 2.

Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam are emerging as preferred locations for these investments due to favorable policies, improving infrastructure, and strategic positioning between major markets 2.

The pattern of investment is increasingly decentralized, with capital flowing beyond traditional hubs like Singapore to tier 1 and tier 2 cities across the region, a strategy that aligns with Equinix’s multi-country ASEAN expansion 2.

2️⃣ Cross-border digital infrastructure critical for capturing ASEAN’s trillion-dollar digital economy

Equinix’s strategy of interconnecting its facilities across Malaysia and Singapore represents a crucial competitive advantage in a region where seamless cross-border connectivity is becoming essential.
