Epic Angels invests in Mexico startup BioPlaster Research
Epic Angels has made its first investment in Mexico, backing BioPlaster Research, a local R&D startup that develops packaging materials from sargassum algae.
Other participants in the pre-seed round include GridX, Amplifica Capital, Zero by Fifty, and Zenani Capital.
Epic Angels is a Singapore-based all-female investor collective with over 750 members and a focus on early-stage startups in Asia Pacific and Latin America.
BioPlaster Research plans to use the new funding for setting up a pilot plant, launching commercial production, and scaling operations.
BioPlaster Research says its technology converts invasive sargassum algae into biodegradable packaging products and has secured supply through a partnership with The Seas We Love.
The company reports over US$5 million in annual letters of intent from potential customers.
Founded by Andrea Bonilla Brunner, BioPlaster Research is also developing new biodegradable materials for textiles and industrial applications.
