Elon Musk’s DOGE focus sparks ‘code red’ warning for Tesla

Tesla is facing challenges as it prepares to announce its first-quarter earnings on April 22, 2025.

Analysts, including Dan Ives from Wedbush Securities, have expressed concerns about the impact of CEO Elon Musk’s external engagements on the company’s performance and brand image.

Ives stated that Tesla’s brand has been affected by Musk’s involvement with the US government and his connection to the cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE).

Since January 17, 2025, Tesla’s stock has dropped 43% following weak deliveries and consumer protests, potentially causing a 15 to 20% drop in long-term demand.

Tesla also faces risks from US-China trade tensions and pressure to clarify 2025 sales goals and progress in autonomous driving and robotaxi plans.

Despite the challenges, Ives still rates Tesla as “outperform” but stresses the need for Musk to focus fully as CEO to regain stability.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tesla’s shift from environmental icon to political symbol

The rapid transformation of Tesla’s brand perception demonstrates how quickly company identities can become politically polarized in today’s hyper-partisan environment.

Research shows a partisan divide forming in Tesla’s consumer base, with Democrats’ likelihood to purchase dropping from 9.1% to 8.9%, while Republicans’ interest increased from 7% to 10.2% following Musk’s political endorsements 1.

This shift is significant because Tesla’s core customers were historically affluent, environmentally-conscious consumers who aligned with progressive values rather than conservative ones 2.

The brand damage has manifested in tangible market losses, with registrations in Germany plummeting by 76% to just 1,429 vehicles while the overall EV market grew by 31%, indicating this isn’t just an industry-wide slowdown 3.

This represents a brand identity challenge as Tesla transitions from being viewed primarily as a sustainability champion to being perceived as a partisan political emblem.

2️⃣ CEO political activism carries measurable business consequences

Musk’s case provides a clear data point in the ongoing debate about whether corporate leaders should engage in partisan politics, with evidence pointing to significant business impact.
