Elon Musk to focus more on companies after X outages

Elon Musk, CEO of X, xAI, Tesla, and SpaceX, announced plans to enhance his focus on his companies after outages on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

He acknowledged the need for operational improvements, stating on X, “As evidenced by the X uptime issues this week, major operational improvements need to be made.”

The outages, linked to a data center issue, caused users difficulty accessing the platform, according to X’s engineering team and outage tracking site DownDetector.

Musk said he would be “Back to spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms.”

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Musk’s management style consistently prioritizes crisis immersion over delegation

Musk’s statement about “spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms” reflects his well-documented transformational leadership approach that combines hands-on involvement with demanding expectations.

At Tesla and SpaceX, Musk has consistently demonstrated this immersive management style during critical periods, working alongside engineers during production challenges and sleeping on factory floors during what he calls “production hell” periods 1.

His direct intervention during X’s outage follows a pattern seen across his companies where he personally engages with technical problems rather than delegating to managers, a strategy that drives innovation but has been linked to employee burnout and high turnover rates 2.

Research indicates Musk’s approach blends autocratic and democratic styles, adapting based on the urgency of situations, with crisis moments triggering his most intense direct involvement 1.

His management tactics have proven polarizing within the tech industry, with critics pointing to the human cost while supporters highlight the technological breakthroughs achieved under extreme pressure 3.

2️⃣ X’s operational challenges reflect broader struggles in platform evolution

The recent outages at X point to deeper operational challenges that have persisted since Musk’s acquisition, with this being the second major outage in recent months, the previous one linked to a cyberattack 4.

Despite rebranding to become an “everything app,” X has shown limited functional progress two years after its transition from Twitter, with stagnant daily active user numbers hovering around 250 million since November 2022 5.

The platform’s recent technical difficulties come amid reported declines in European usage (down 15%) and questionable growth metrics that contrast with Musk’s public statements about user engagement 5.
