Elon Musk plans uncrewed Starship Mars mission by late 2026

Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft could undertake its first uncrewed mission to Mars by late 2026, despite recent test flight failures

He noted that reaching Mars depends on overcoming challenges like orbital refueling, with a 50% chance of meeting the 2026 target.

The mission would align with the optimal Mars-Earth window and might send Tesla-built humanoid robots before future human landings.

NASA plans to use Starship for its Artemis program, targeting a human return to the Moon as early as 2027.

Mars missions could potentially follow in the 2030s.

However, Musk has previously set and missed earlier targets for Mars missions, including unmanned and crewed launches in 2018 and 2024.

Musk admitted past delays and recent Starship failures, but said they’ve helped SpaceX improve and prepare for more test flights.

By 2018, the target had shifted to sending uncrewed cargo missions in 2022 and the first humans to Mars in 2024 2.

As recently as 2019, SpaceX maintained plans for uncrewed Mars missions in the mid-2020s with crewed missions to follow shortly thereafter 3.

Now in 2025, even with substantial progress on Starship development, the timeline has been pushed to the end of 2026 for just the first uncrewed mission, with Musk himself giving only 50-50 odds of meeting that target.

This pattern reflects the genuine technical challenges of Mars exploration that consistently prove more difficult than initially projected, including the need for orbital refueling capabilities that Musk identified as a critical dependency.
