Elevation Capital backs $16m round in Indian edtech firm SpeakX.ai
SpeakX.ai, an India-based generative AI-powered English learning platform, has raised US$16 million in a pre-series B round led by WestBridge Capital, with Elevation Capital and Goodwater Capital also participating.
Investors in the round include Shyamal Anadkat of OpenAI and Ronnie Screwvala of upGrad.
The company has reached US$7.5 million in annual recurring revenue, 200,000 paying subscribers, and has been EBITDA-profitable since April 2025.
SpeakX.ai offers an AI tutor for conversational English practice and plans to use the new funding to enhance its technology, expand its team, and add support for more Indian regional languages.
Most of its users are Hindi speakers, but the company plans to roll out in Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, and other languages in the coming year.
Founded in 2023, SpeakX.ai has over 1 million monthly learners and is focused on the Indian market for now.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
SpeakX’s one-day CAC payback is strong but may mask regional volatility
- SpeakX recoups customer acquisition cost (CAC) in one day. The data does not support direct comparisons with global language apps.
- Month 3 retention sits at 35 percent, which implies 65 percent churn within 90 days for users who stop paying.
- Seventy percent of learners speak Hindi. Expansion to Telugu, Tamil, Marathi plus Bengali is planned within a year. CAC efficiency may swing by language region due to local demand and media fragmentation.
Telecom operators and handset Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) open bundling paths for third-party developers serving Tier 2/3 (smaller-city) English learners
- Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is a state-run telecom operator with partners Ericsson, Qualcomm, Cisco and Nokia. These programs train more than 2,000 students each year in 5G and AI. English learning apps, third-party payment processors, and content studios could pitch spoken-English tools for subsidized smartphone bundles in rural connectivity programs.
- India plans to digitize more than one million public schools with interactive flat panels. Business-to-Business-to-Consumer (B2B2C) openings emerge for Software as a Service (SaaS) firms that build white-label conversational AI layers deployable by school systems. This helps lower direct consumer acquisition costs.
- The Make in India initiative, a government program to boost domestic manufacturing, gives preferred tender status to local edtech manufacturers. Foreign AI speech technology providers may license engines to Indian hardware makers that produce educational devices. Map active Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partnerships to find paths for preloaded distribution on locally manufactured devices.
