Electronic Arts partner with UK AI firm on game content creation

Electronic Arts has partnered with Stability AI to develop new AI models and tools for game content creation.

The collaboration aims to speed up the production of assets such as textures and 3D environments for EA’s artists, designers, and developers.

The partnership will first focus on creating new workflows for generating physically based rendering (PBR) materials to achieve accurate color and lighting in games.

The companies are also exploring AI systems that let artists pre-visualize 3D environments from prompts.

EA has previously used machine learning to build tools like HeadStart, which creates in-game character likenesses from photos.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

EA’s bet on PBR generation arrives amid doubts on generative AI’s production readiness

  • EA is co-developing with Stability AI to speed up Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials. Stable Fast 3D creates assets from one image and outputs UV-unwrapped meshes (3D models with 2D texture coordinates) with material parameters plus albedo colors (base surface color without lighting) in 0.5 seconds with reduced illumination bake-in 1 that differs from EA’s goal of exact color and light across environments.
  • Stable Fast 3D was trained on renders from Objaverse (a large open collection of 3D objects) 2. Its docs say it was not built to produce factual or true representations of people or events 2, while EA needs authentic likenesses and branded spaces. SPAR3D enables direct point-cloud editing (a set of 3D points used to represent geometry) under the Stability AI Community License 3. EA has not shared a production timeline.

Third-party vendors can benefit from studios’ urgency to lower AI adoption risk

  • 90% of game developers already use generative AI (genAI) 4, yet 30% think it harms the sector 5, a 12-point jump from 2024. At EA, employees report AI-generated code needs constant fixes 5, and 40% of developers recommend small pilots before full rollout 4.
  • Usage skews toward leadership, with 87% of gaming executives using AI daily versus 27% of employees at gaming companies 5. The Stability AI Community License permits commercial use up to 1 million in annual revenue 13, with Enterprise licenses required above that level.
