Ele.me partners with White Rhino for campus robot delivery in China

Chinese autonomous driving startup White Rhino has partnered with Ele.me, a local services platform under Alibaba, to deploy unmanned delivery vehicles across university campuses in China.

The initiative will use Level 4 autonomous driving technology to revamp campus food delivery, aiming to improve last-mile efficiency and meet rising demand for contactless services in semi-closed environments. The first phase is set to launch at 100 universities nationwide.

White Rhino has previously tested its L4-grade solutions in industrial parks and other controlled zones. The deal with Ele.me marks one of its largest commercial deployments to date.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Campus environments serve as strategic proving grounds for autonomous delivery

Ele.me and White Rhino’s focus on university campuses follows a well-established pattern in autonomous vehicle deployment, where controlled environments offer ideal testing conditions before wider urban rollout.

Campuses provide predictable routes, limited vehicle traffic, and tech-savvy young users, creating a practical setting for refining autonomous technology while generating revenue.

These environments allow companies to demonstrate safety and reliability at scale, critical factors in building consumer trust as the autonomous last-mile delivery market is projected to grow from $1.9 billion in 2023 to $6.2 billion by 2030 1.

The 100-campus deployment represents one of the largest commercial implementations of Level 4 autonomous technology in China, providing valuable operational data that will inform future expansions beyond controlled settings.

University settings also bring predictable peak demand periods around class schedules and meal times, allowing for optimization of fleet management and deliveries in ways that would be more challenging in less structured urban environments.

2️⃣ Technology differentiation becomes critical in China’s hypercompetitive food delivery market

Ele.me’s partnership with White Rhino represents a strategic move in China’s massive food delivery market, valued at $81.9 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $197.9 billion by 2033 2.

With intense competition from dominant player Meituan and new entrants like JD.com offering aggressive pricing strategies, established players like Ele.me must find new ways to differentiate their services beyond discounting 3.

Autonomous delivery provides a meaningful technology advantage by potentially reducing the 41-53% of supply chain costs typically associated with last-mile delivery operations 4.

The partnership demonstrates how delivery platforms are increasingly turning to specialized technology companies to enhance their logistics capabilities rather than building autonomous solutions in-house.
