EDP Renewables APAC, EDP’s Singapore-based regional renewable energy unit, has commissioned a 44-megawatt-peak (MWp) utility-scale solar project in Fukushima, Japan, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon.

The solar farm covers 60 hectares of a former golf course and uses more than 63,000 solar panels. EDP said the project is expected to generate more than 48 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity a year.

It is the company’s largest solar project in Japan and its second APAC PPA with Amazon, after a Singapore solar project in 2021.

EDP said its APAC business has more than 1.4 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of installed renewable energy capacity across markets including Japan, Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

In Japan, corporate PPAs typically run 10–25 years, and off-site structures can use the grid to deliver renewable electricity from remote projects to corporate buyers.

Amazon said it supports more than 600 renewable energy projects globally.
