Dutch fintech firm Bunq reapplies for US bank charter

Bunq, a Netherlands-based fintech firm, has reapplied for a US national bank charter after withdrawing its earlier application in January 2024.

The company filed its new application with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) on December 6.

Bunq targets digital nomads who travel frequently between the US, Europe, and the UK and face challenges opening traditional bank accounts.

Founder and CEO Ali Niknam said the firm is now better prepared to address regulatory questions.

More than 30 companies have applied to become US banks under the second Trump administration, according to Klaros Group.
