Duolingo adds AI to expand courses, reach more users

Duolingo Inc. is incorporating AI to expand its course catalog and reach a broader global audience, according to Chief Financial Officer Matt Skaruppa.

The company is developing diverse educational content beyond language learning.

It refers to this initiative as creating a “human tutor in your pocket.”

In April, the platform added 148 new courses developed with generative AI.

This move doubled its language offerings for non-English speakers within a year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI accelerates content creation while raising quality concerns

Duolingo’s launch of 148 new AI-generated courses represents a fundamental shift in educational content economics, reducing development time from years to months 1.

This acceleration explains why Duolingo can rapidly expand beyond languages into areas like chess, as the company leverages AI to scale content creation at unprecedented speeds.

However, this speed-versus-quality tension has real consequences. The article notes some users have threatened to cancel subscriptions, and Duolingo lost over 300,000 TikTok followers amid concerns about content quality.

The backlash reflects broader industry patterns where companies face criticism for prioritizing AI-driven quantity over educational depth, as seen in SlashGear’s reporting on user concerns about Duolingo’s “AI-first” transition 2.

This tension between scaling rapidly and maintaining educational quality reflects a central challenge for all AI-powered education platforms as they expand their offerings.

2️⃣ AI education faces critical expertise imbalances

Research shows a concerning disconnect in AI education development: only 8.9% of AI education research comes from education departments, with most originating from computer science fields 3.

This expertise imbalance helps explain why Duolingo’s rapid expansion into new domains (like chess) through AI might face pedagogical challenges – the technology may advance faster than the educational methodology.
