Dubai deeptech startup Xpanceo nets $250m series A
Xpanceo, a startup based in Dubai, has raised US$250 million in a series A funding round to further develop smart contact lenses.
The funding, led by Hong Kong-based Opportunity Venture (Asia) Ltd., values Xpanceo at US$1.35 billion.
Founded in 2021 by Roman Axelrod, a Russian entrepreneur, and Valentyn Volkov, a Ukrainian scientist, Xpanceo aims to create contact lenses equipped with extended reality features.
The lenses are intended to provide functionalities such as night vision, zoom capabilities, and real-time health monitoring.
The company plans to have a prototype ready for clinical trials by late 2026.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Smart contact lens development has a history of high-profile failures
Xpanceo’s $250 million funding comes against a backdrop of previous ambitious smart lens projects that failed to reach commercialization despite significant backing.
Google’s smart contact lens project, announced in 2014 and backed by pharmaceutical giant Novartis, was discontinued in 2018 after researchers couldn’t establish reliable correlation between tear glucose and blood glucose levels 1.
The fundamental challenges that derailed Google’s project, such as miniaturization of components, power supply limitations, and biocompatibility, remain significant hurdles for Xpanceo’s more ambitious features like night vision and zoom capabilities 2.
Smart lens development faces a particularly difficult technical challenge: creating electronics tiny enough to fit in a contact lens while maintaining transparency, flexibility, and safety for long-term wear 3.
The timeline Xpanceo has set, clinical trials by the end of 2026, appears optimistic when compared to previous smart lens development cycles, which typically encountered years of regulatory and technical delays before reaching clinical testing phases.
2️⃣ Middle East defies global venture capital trends through strategic investment
Xpanceo’s massive funding round exemplifies how the Middle East venture capital ecosystem has maintained momentum despite global contractions in startup funding.
While emerging market VC funding fell 40% to $9.1 billion in 2024, the Middle East showed greater resilience with a smaller 29% decline, maintaining its position as an increasingly important tech funding hub 4.
