Dropbox chief customer officer to step down as growth slows
Dropbox’s chief customer officer, Eric Cox, is stepping down, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on April 11.
He will remain in his role temporarily to assist with the transition and continue as a non-executive employee through mid-August.
A Dropbox spokesperson said Cox’s decision was driven by a desire to spend more time with his family. The filing did not name a successor.
Cox joined Dropbox in November 2023 after serving as chief operating officer at Vimeo and spending 19 years at Adobe in various leadership roles.
His departure comes as Dropbox faces challenges, including slowed revenue growth and a 20% workforce layoff in October 2024.
The company is now focusing on AI-driven tools like Dropbox Dash, recently adding enterprise features such as data governance controls.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Executive churn reflects broader challenges in Dropbox’s strategic evolution
Cox’s departure continues a pattern of C-suite instability at Dropbox that has included multiple high-profile exits over recent years.
The company previously saw its COO Olivia Nottebohm leave after less than a year in the role, which some industry analysts have described as creating perception problems about the company’s direction 1.
This turnover comes amid Dropbox’s restructuring efforts, with the company cutting 16% of its workforce (approximately 500 employees) in April 2023, followed by another 20% reduction (528 people) in October 2.
These organizational changes reflect Dropbox’s struggle to find sustainable growth while transitioning from its core storage business to new AI-powered services like Dropbox Dash mentioned in the article.
The company’s strategic pivot toward AI necessitates “a different mix of skills,” as CEO Drew Houston acknowledged in previous communications about workforce reductions 2.
2️⃣ Tech leadership transitions increasingly challenging in shifting market conditions
Cox’s relatively brief tenure (joining in November 2023) highlights the difficulties companies face in maintaining consistent executive leadership during strategic transformations.
