A strike by South Korean concrete delivery drivers is raising concerns about delays to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix semiconductor plant expansions projects.

The National Ready-Mixed Concrete Transport Workers’ Union halted deliveries on June 9.

The union said about 8,000 members joined the stoppage. About 11,000 trucks stopped running across Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon.

Drivers sought higher transport rates and changes, including recognition of collective bargaining rights.

Union members blocked deliveries from two concrete plants in Pyeongtaek on June 12, halting concrete pouring at Samsung’s construction site. Cancelled deliveries also halted concrete work at SK hynix’s Yongin plant.

SK hynix has been accelerating construction at Yongin for future memory chip capacity. Samsung has described Pyeongtaek as a key foundry base.

The stoppage continued after union members rejected a tentative deal on June 11. SK hynix said the short-term impact should be limited. The company adjusted its construction sequence.

Samsung declined to comment.
