DoorDash debuts autonomous robot ‘Dot’ for food delivery
DoorDash has launched Dot, a commercial autonomous robot designed for local deliveries, starting with an early access program in Tempe and Mesa, Arizona.
Dot, built in-house by DoorDash Labs, is an all-electric vehicle that travels on bike lanes, roads, sidewalks, and driveways, and is intended for neighborhood trips.
The robot is part of DoorDash’s new autonomous delivery platform, which matches delivery orders with the most suitable method, including human drivers, robots, and drones, using AI.
Dot is integrated with its existing logistics network and aims to help merchants fulfill orders quickly and efficiently.
The company said Dashers will continue to handle most deliveries, while autonomous technology like Dot will be used for certain local trips.
DoorDash, based in the US, provides on-demand delivery services through a mix of human couriers and automated solutions.
The company plans to expand Dot and its autonomous platform to additional markets in the future.
