DJI will debut a robot vacuum cleaner using drone tech

Chinese drone manufacturer DJI is entering the home appliance market with its first robot vacuum and mop, named DJI ROMO.

DJI has reportedly been developing robot vacuums for over four years. The upcoming model is expected to be mid-to-high-end, featuring both sweeping and mopping functions, and is in mass production and will be released this month.

DJI aims to utilize its expertise in obstacle avoidance and sensor technology. This transition from aerial to ground-based devices marks a significant expansion for the company.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tech diversification becomes essential strategy for hardware specialists

DJI’s move into robot vacuums represents a growing pattern of specialized tech companies expanding beyond their core markets to sustain growth.

This follows similar diversification strategies from companies like Dyson, which moved from traditional vacuums to air purifiers, hair care, and eventually robotic cleaners 1.

DJI specifically invests heavily in R&D with 25% of its workforce dedicated to product development, enabling the company to apply its technological expertise across different categories 2.

The company plans to leverage its drone-developed obstacle avoidance algorithms and sensor technology for ground-based navigation, transferring aerial innovation to floor cleaning 3.

This approach aligns with DJI’s broader corporate strategy focusing on both industrial applications and consumer products, as outlined in their future plans to “industrialize and diversify” 4.

2️⃣ Chinese manufacturers evolving from budget offerings to premium market positions

DJI’s entry as a mid-to-high-end device continues the trend of Chinese brands successfully competing in premium segments of the home appliance market.

Chinese robot vacuum manufacturer Ecovacs has already achieved significant market success, controlling over 60% of the domestic Chinese market by 2013 and growing to a $6.38 billion market capitalization by 2023 5.

Within the robot vacuum sector specifically, Chinese brand Roborock now leads the global market with a 16% share, outpacing iRobot’s 13.7% share despite the latter’s pioneering position and 30+ million units sold since 2002 3.

The robotic cleaner market represents a sizable opportunity with 20.6 million units shipped in the previous year, and DJI enters after four years of product development, suggesting a strategic rather than opportunistic approach 3.
